We’ve been an agricultural cooperative since 1957 – but long before that, we were a community. A group of people connected by the same land, the same work, and a shared sense of culture. Today we continue to grow together, knowing that our future depends on the strength of the community we’ve built.
Our role is to give value to our members’ work – and, through it, to the cultural heritage that work keeps alive.We aim to provide the tools, vision, and continuity that make this possible – to be a point of reference both technically and personally.
We work together to protect the collective identity of this land, to keep its presence alive – in agriculture, in the landscape, and in culture – and to shape its future alongside those who live it every day.
Proud to be Cantina Montelliana
The strength of Cantina Montelliana lies in its growers – in their stories, their skill, and the dedication they bring to their work every day. It’s a knowledge passed down through generations, shaped by a lifelong bond with the land and the fruit it yields.
Today we bring together almost 400 growers who share a way of farming that’s collective by nature and firmly rooted in the land. Most of our growers tend small vineyards – on average two hectares, and in many cases less than half – and it’s this very fragmentation that makes cooperation so essential. Every row of vines is part of a wider mosaic, and every grower adds to the strength of the whole.
Roots, Beginnings and Growth
Viticulture in the Asolo Hills and Montello is rooted in centuries of agricultural and social history. By the mid-20th century, the region’s agricultural culture was changing. These were the years of great cooperative momentum: the new social wineries were born to give strength to fragmented labour, provide economic stability and overcome the isolation of small growers.
In 1957, thirty-two winegrowers came together to form the Cantina Sociale Montelliana e dei Colli Asolani. The first president was Felice Callegari, a charismatic and determined figure who would lead the cooperative for twenty-two years.
The first headquarters in Montebelluna was modest – a small collection point with basic equipment – but the goal was clear: to join forces and build a project that could transform the agricultural fabric of the area.
Around the winery, a technical and human community began to grow, involving not only the members but also local institutions. Training courses multiplied, partnerships were established with agricultural schools – notably the Istituto Agrario di Montebelluna and the Scuola Enologica di Conegliano – new vineyard systems were developed, and groups of young growers began focusing on quality. The membership grew steadily – as did awareness and ambition.
At the end of the 1970s came a turning point: direct bottling. It was a crucial step that allowed the winery to enter the market under its own name, bringing “Montelliana” to the label. It was also a cultural shift – from suppliers to full participants in the value chain, from producers of raw material to creators of value.
In 2009 came a long-awaited milestone: Prosecco DOC Montello e Colli Asolani became Asolo Prosecco DOCG. Cantina Montelliana played a central role – the only cooperative fully rooted within the denomination. Working in the heart of Asolo means representing, through every step of the production chain, the deepest identity of this appellation.
From 2014 onwards, under the current management, the pace of renewal accelerated. Investments were made in technology, logistics, and in the Bottega del Prosecco, and a second production line was launched. The PIWI project introduced resistant varieties to support more sustainable viticulture.
